teaching philosophy

People never cease to amaze, inspire, and fascinate me. In every interaction I discover something new—about myself and the world around me —and this is what makes the teaching of sociology and anthropology such an irresistible journey. I also believe that education is a promise we make to learn from each other—to question, to listen, to discuss, to challenge, to support, to act. And I believe that teaching begins by entering the room as people and considering the possibility and potential of different worlds.

I believe that my task in teaching critical sociology and anthropology is, as Becky Flores writes, "not so much one of revealing the injustices or oppressions in the world – as if students are nothing more than unenlightened members of the masses who simply need to be told false truths – but to interrogate existing truths to consider them in alternative ways we may never before have thought possible."

My courses are challenging and demanding but strive to bring out the best in myself and my students. By integrating a wide variety of readings, lectures, small group discussions, presentations, research projects and creative activities, I encourage students to identify and improve upon their existing strengths as well as to cultivate new skills that will continue to serve them in the future.

In evaluating student work, I am most interested in the quality of their engagement with the course materials and their participation in written and oral dialogue. I pay particular attention to critical thinking and writing skills, contextual and reflexive knowledge, imagination and creativity, as well as improvement throughout the course.
